Trenton Enrichment Programs - After School

  • After School Program

    The Boys & Girls Club holds after-school programs for youth in grades K to 8 every day at our Centre Street  & Spruce Street Clubhouse and on-site at Rivera Middle School and Gregory Elementary. 

    Our nationally-recognized, evidence-based initiatives impact children in three essential ways: academic success, character and citizenship, and healthy lifestyles. A youth development strategy that includes sports and games underlies all of our programs and fosters a sense of belonging, competence, and usefulness.

    We offer free bus pick up from 6 schools to our Centre Street Clubhouse: Village Charter; Foundation Academy; Martin Luther King; Parker; Columbus; Mott. Program hours are after school until 6:30pm

    We offer free bus pick up to our Spruce Street ClubHouse from these Trenton schools: Hedgepeth Williams, Paul Robeston and Trenton High Schools, including 9th grade Academy.

Academic Enrichment

  • Power Hour
    Power Hour is a comprehensive homework help and tutoring program to help raise the academic proficiency of Club members ages 6 to 12.

    Tutoring is offered for elementary and middle school students one-on-one with a tutor or in small group classes.

    Digital Arts/STEM 
    Digital Arts introduces Club members to web page design (Web Tech), graphic design (Design Tech), photo illustration (Photo Tech), music composition (Music Tech), and movie making (Movie Tech). Instruction is designed and supplemented online on web sites developed by Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Healthy Lifestyles

  • Cooking Class
    Cooking Class is a dynamic wellness program that demonstrates how to shop and prepare food that is nutritionally sound. Each session includes a nutrition lesson after which a meal is created using that day's lesson. The dishes then are offered to Club kids as a nutritional meal or snack. The relationship between food and culture is also addressed and members learn how their ethnic and cultural background may influence the kinds of foods they eat.

    4-H Programs
    4-H programs are offered through the Mercer County 4-H Club. Activities include 4-H-4-Reel (movie making) and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).

  • Passport to Manhood

    Passport to Manhood promotes and teaches responsibility while reinforcing positive behaviors in male Club members ages 11 to 14. Passport to Manhood consists of 14 small-group sessions, each of which concentrates on a specific aspect of manhood through highly interactive activities. Each participant is issued his own "Passport" to underscore the idea that he is on a journey of maturation and personal growth.

    SMART Moves
    SMART Moves (Skills Mastery and Resistance Training) is a prevention and education program that addresses the problems of drug and alcohol use and premature sexual activity. The program uses a team approach involving Club staff members, peer leaders, parents, and community representatives

    SMART Girls
    SMART Girls is an outgrowth of the popular SMART Moves program. SMART Girls is a health, fitness, prevention through education, and self-esteem enhancement program for girls ages 10 to 15. The program is designed to encourage healthy attitudes and lifestyles that will enable early adolescent girls to develop to their full potential.

Character and Citizenship

  • Torch Club
    Torch Club is a small-group leadership development program targeted to tweens age 11 to 13. Members elect officers and plan and implement their own activities and community service projects.

    Girl Scouts
    Girl Scout programs are offered through the Girl Scouts of Central & Southern New Jersey. Under the guidance of their Girl Scout leader, girls connect with each other and build self-esteem and confidence in their skills as they work on a range of projects and gain life experiences.

    Youth of the Month
    Youth of the Month is a unique opportunity to recognize the achievements of our young leaders each month. The program promotes and celebrates service to the Club, community and family, academic performance, moral character and life goals. Different Club members are selected each month based on the behavior and signs of improvement.

Sports and Games

  • Basketball
    Every student who participates in our extended day learning programs can join a basketball team appropriate for their age group. Kids in grades 3 to 5 can play in the junior varsity league while sixth through eighth grade students play in the varsity league. Teams practice two times per week and compete in weekly games against other school sites.

    Flag Football
    Flag Football intramural teams compete to remove a flag or flag belt from the ball carrier. Games focus on Flag Football play fundamentals of running, throwing, and catching. Teams can be composed of both boys and girls.

    Soccer games offer every player the opportunity to participate in soccer at his or her own level. Emphasis is placed on the development of soccer skills, participation, and enjoying the game of soccer.

  • Triple Play: A Game Plan for the Mind, Body, and Soul
    Triple Play is a health and wellness program designed to empower young people to make informed decisions about their physical, mental, and social well-being. The goal of Triple Play is to improve our Club members' knowledge of healthy habits, good nutrition and physical fitness; increase the number of hours per day they participate in physical activities; and strengthen their ability to interact positively with others and engage in healthy relationships.
