angle-left Mychael Holloway named Youth of the Year - BGC Mercer

Moves On to State Competition

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Mercer County recently held their Youth of the Year event and nominated Mychael Holloway of Trenton to represent them in the state competition in May. Mychael and the other contenders, fellow Club members,  Sanyei Jones and Jaslyn Coxen, all attend STEM Civics High School. Each had to complete two essays, a resume and cover letter, present a 3 minute speech and answer questions from a panel of judges. They all impressed the judges. As the winner, Mychael will receive an educational award from BGCMercer as recognition.

Mychael impressed the judges with her passion for art and how she has used it not only as an opportunity to express herself but to connect with others. Mychael has been involved with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Mercer for many years, first with our After School Program when she attended Village Charter school, over nine years ago. Her mentor has witnessed her development, willingness to learn, and her drive. Mychael describes her early years as a shy, introverted, and reserved Club member participating in programs. The staff at BGC, and her recent mentor, have witnessed over time how she has blossomed into a self-confident and self-aware young woman and role model for others. In High School, she gained knowledge and experience through the Club’s Work-based Learning Experiences. She worked with our BGC child care program and has demonstrated her creativity, adaptability, and leadership with the Club’s Teen Program and through her work.

Reggie Coleman, Executive VP of Operations, commented that Mychael “has overcome societal pressures facing teens in our area today and plans to continue to give back to her community as a positive and product role model.”

Mychael is at the top of her high school class with consecutive Honor/Merit roll achievements for academics for the past four years, runs track and cross county, and participates in the Korean and Music Clubs. She will be attending Rider University in the fall and intends to major in game and interactive media design. Congratulations Mychael – we are so proud of you!
