angle-left Local Companies Pitch-In to Discuss Careers or Offer Job Opportunities

@ virtual College, Career & Job Fair March 25th

Dozens of professionals from local companies volunteer to discuss careers or even offer work opportunities with High School students, at the https://www.bgcmercer.org/college-career-job-fair

One example is Novo Nordisk. Session speaker Amanda Layendecker, Manager in Promotional Materials Management at Novo Nordisk, wants students to understand that they don't have to limit themselves to what they currently know. They can broaden their horizons.  Through the fair's video meet session, she hopes she can "open their eyes to possibilities." She feels that these small group talks and Q&A might provide ideas for careers beyond what local high schoolers know from their family, friends, and immediate experience. She has volunteered for BGC through her Novo Nordisk Millennials Employee Resource Group before. The group wants to bring other generations the knowledge about their experience to make better decisions. She noted that co-ops and internships help get many practical experiences in her field.

Another session speaker, Doug Johnson Sr. VP and Property Underwriting Manager at Munich Re America, wants to dispel the notion that insurance is just about the salesperson or an adjuster. Local Munich Re offices focus on business-to-business insurance and reinsurance, also known as insurance for insurance companies. There are many possibilities in the industry, from underwriting, customer service, legal, marketing, accounting, even scientists, and you don't have to be a finance major. Munich Re has a rotation program for recent college grads which he went through, now called the GRID program, which can expose graduates pursuing underwriting careers to different areas of the company, while they live and work around the world in various offices.  Two speakers joining Doug are currently participating in the GRID program and will share their paths through college to recently entering a job in the industry.  He also noted that Munich Re is at the forefront of addressing Climate Change through its' insurance business and brings innovation to the industry.

These are just two examples of speakers who will meet to discuss career paths and opportunities in their industry at the BGCM College, Career & Job Fair March 25th 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. It’s free and open to the community. For more info and a list of companies, colleges, and organizations, go to https://www.bgcmercer.org/college-career-job-fair
