Our New Reading Success Program, in cooperation with Trenton School District, demonstrates our commitment to educational opportunity. As part of our After School curriculum, Lexia educational software assesses students, tracks data, and provides activities for skill improvement. Staff then provides extra support tailored to student needs.

INVESTING IN LITERACY

80% of students who attend Trenton schools are not on grade level below grade level struggle to learn. This factor contribute to Trenton’s nearly 50% High School drop out rate.

With Lexia, each student works at his or her own pace to complete tasks on a personalized learning path. All answers and accomplishments are reported to a teacher. Students in need then receive additional targeted support from Club teachers, professionals and volunteers.

Literacy skills have an impact on future academic and career success. So, BGC Mercer has trained a literacy specialist at each Club location. Students and parents will be provided monthly reports and updates on performance, along with suggested activities that can be done at home.

It is anticipated that after 2 years of participation in Reading for Success, all students will be on grade level in reading and language arts. The goal is to create a dramatic increase in literacy levels among our members--increasing opportunities for future success.
