The Boys and Girls Clubs of Mercer County is working closely with middle-school youths in need of academic support to help them reach their full potential. Addressing our nation’s drop-out crisis is a national problem, and the Boys & Girls Club is part of the solution.
With support from Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the NJ Department of Justice, the Boys & Girls Club of Mercer County has implemented Be Great, Graduate, a new academic success strategy.
Be Great, Graduate features:
In September 2010, the Boys & Girls Club enrolled 100 kids from our after-school membership who met selected background criteria indicating risk for dropping out of school. This pilot group is being tracked through high school graduation and will participate in all three phases of the program.
Torch Clubs are chartered, small-group leadership and service clubs for boys and girls ages 11 to 13. Torch Clubs are conducted at each of our after-school program sites that serve middle-school kids.
A Torch Club is a powerful vehicle through which Club staff members can help meet the special character development needs of younger adolescents at a critical stage in their life.
Torch Club members learn to elect officers and work together to implement activities in four areas: service to Club and community; education; health and fitness; and social recreation.
Members plan and implement their own activities and community service projects. The Staples National Torch Club Awards are presented annually to Torch Clubs with outstanding programs and activities in each area.
Last year, the Torch Club at the Boys & Girls Club’s Gregory School program site earned 2nd place nationally in the category of Service to the Club and Community for its proposal to help fifth-graders make a smooth transition to middle school.
Career Explorers provides career exploration activities for children ages nine to 15 before they are of employment age and is designed to educate boys and girls about career opportunities and orient them to the world of work.
Tween conferences are educational events for middle school girls and boys that consist of activities and workshops on various topics including health and wellness, community service, and public speaking. Club kids can participate in rock climbing and arts and crafts during the conference, followed by raffle giveaways, and a dance social.
Tween Rock Events
Following every tween conference and educational workshop is a tween rock event where club kids can attend a tween-only party for only $1. Tweens who do not attend the day’s educational workshop pay $5. Past educational topics have included Facebook etiquette, financial literacy, and a discussion on the dangers of "sexting".
